In her upcoming presentation, "Places in place-making or how place personhood can be threatening," PhD candidate Januschka Schmidt will discuss the active role of places in place-making processes at sacred heritage sites in Kyoto, Japan. Her study has revealed that heritage sites are not passive settings for visitors to be consumed, but are instead imbued with agency, actively engaging with visitors and affording them with experiences. This perspective of places, rooted in animist beliefs, highlights a dynamic interplay between human and non-human agents. In this talk, she will explore how these interactions enhance our understanding of place-making, challenging traditional approaches to heritage sites in tourism contexts.
