Title: Geometric modelling and manufacturing
Abstract:
Geometric modeling is very closely related to manufacturing in situations when objects modeled in the digital realm are subsequently manufactured. While designing a NURBS surface using a proper software is very straightforward by moving its control points, it is rather difficult to find manufacturable segments on such a general free-form surface. In this talk, I will review our recent work in this reverse engineering direction and discuss possibilities and limitations of geometrical approaches that aim at approximating general free-form geometry by manufacturable patches. In particular, I will briefly discuss three projects that use circular arc splines [1], sweeps of planar profiles [2], and envelopes of surfaces of revolution [3].
