Every year around this time the discussion about fireworks flares up again. A tradition to honor or a dangerous and polluting hobby that should be banned? On Thursday 21 November, the Public Academy for Jurisprudence will focus on the fireworks ban.

In many municipalities there is confusion about where you are allowed to light fireworks and where you are not. Karin Hofman, staff lawyer at the Administrative Law department at the Northern Netherlands District Court, will discuss the options that municipalities have to establish fireworks-free zones, or to ban fireworks in the entire municipality. She also discusses the measures that a mayor can take with regard to individuals.

Karin Broere, prosecutor at the Functional Public Prosecution Service, will discuss the illegality of fireworks. For example in Europe, and how European legislation is regulated. She also discusses the Oorwurm project, in which illegal fireworks can be digitally traced all year round.

The Public Academy for Jurisprudence

Through lectures aimed at the general public, the Publieksacademie voor de Rechtspraak (Public Academy for Jurisprudence) seeks to satisfy this immense interest. Judges, public prosecutors, professors and other experts discuss legal topics that affect many people. The lectures are suitable for a wide audience and do not require knowledge of the law.

The Public Academy is a collaboration between the Court of the Northern Netherlands, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, the Northern Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper.
