An (imminent) eviction is a serious problem. A problem that precedes a lot and for which there can be various reasons. Consider significant rent arrears due to financial problems, causing nuisance or the discovery of cannabis. What actually happens during an eviction? When will it happen? To what extent are you, as a resident, protected by law?

During the Public Academy for Jurisprudence on Wednesday 27 February, professor of public order law Michel Vols and senior subdistrict judge Gert-Jan Smits will discuss these questions, among others.

One of Michel Vols' areas of expertise is evictions. During the Public Academy he talks about the state of affairs in the Northern Netherlands: how often does it happen and in what situations. He also discusses the rights you have as a resident and how you are protected against eviction by law in the Netherlands.

Gert-Jan Smits is a senior commercial & subdistrict judge at the Northern Netherlands District Court. During the Public Academy, he explains how a judge reaches a decision in eviction cases. Which factors count, what are the considerations that need to be made? He also shows that these are sometimes dire cases. Do you take that into account? And how does that work? For example, what are alternatives to eviction?

The Public Academy for Jurisprudence

Through lectures aimed at the general public, the Publieksacademie voor de Rechtspraak (Public Academy for Jurisprudence) seeks to satisfy this immense interest. Judges, public prosecutors, professors and other experts discuss legal topics that affect many people. The lectures are suitable for a wide audience and do not require knowledge of the law.

The Public Academy is a collaboration between the Court of the Northern Netherlands, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, the Northern Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper.
