A major danger to society is the entanglement of the upper and underworld. This is called undermining. A concept that has increasingly appeared in research and in the media in recent years. Undermining affects the entire society and that is why it is important to invest in awareness. But what exactly is undermining?

During the Public Academy for Jurisprudence on Wednesday 25 April, public prosecutor and team leader Subversion at the Public Prosecution Service Northern Netherlands, Dirk ten Boer, will discuss subversive crime in our society. He mentions examples and indicates how the government can take action.

As chairman of the Northern Fraud Chamber, judge Jeroen van Bruggen sees many criminal cases involving subversion. Fraud, bribery and money laundering are serious criminal offenses that can have major consequences for society. These are also facts that are sometimes difficult to prove precisely because of the intertwining between legal and illegal actions. Using practical examples, Jeroen van Bruggen explains how criminal judges in the Northern Netherlands handle these types of cases, what he, as a judge, pays attention to in such a case and how the sentence is ultimately determined.

The Public Academy for Jurisprudence

Through lectures aimed at the general public, the Publieksacademie voor de Rechtspraak (Public Academy for Jurisprudence) seeks to satisfy this immense interest. Judges, public prosecutors, professors and other experts discuss legal topics that affect many people. The lectures are suitable for a wide audience and do not require knowledge of the law.

The Public Academy is a collaboration between the Court of the Northern Netherlands, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, the Northern Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper.
