Inheritance law, leaving or receiving an inheritance
You prefer not to think about your own death too often, but isn't it important to have things settled? What do you leave behind and what about inheritance? Can you disinherit your child? Do you have to pay all the debts of an inheritance yourself? And what about inheritance tax? These are questions that will be addressed during the Public Justice Academy on Wednesday, November 9, 2016.
The speakers of this evening are Prof. Wilbert Kolkman, Professor of Private Law at the University of Groningen and Senior Judge Mr. Jeff Biesma of the District Court of Northern Netherlands. Mr. Kolkman will discuss the "Legitimate Portion" (rights of disinherited children) and the different choices an heir can make (accept or reject). Where are the inheritance law pitfalls? Mr. Biesma explains the role of the judge: coach or referee? He also talks about the types of cases that come before the judge (including distributions, dismissal and appointment of an executor, inheritance), about the expectations people have of a judge and how real they are.

The Public Academy for Jurisprudence
Through lectures aimed at the general public, the Publieksacademie voor de Rechtspraak (Public Academy for Jurisprudence) seeks to satisfy this immense interest. Judges, public prosecutors, professors and other experts discuss legal topics that affect many people. The lectures are suitable for a wide audience and do not require knowledge of the law.
The Public Academy is a collaboration between the Court of the Northern Netherlands, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, the Northern Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper.
