Prof Dr W.D. (Wilbert) Kolkman, LLM
Wilbert Kolkman (born 10 Nov 1973) is full professor of civil and notarial law at the department of Private Law and Notarial Law of the University of Groningen. His teaching and research focus mainly on the field of inheritance law, matrimonial property law, real property law and related tax laws. In 2001, he participated in the MHO project Upgrading Teaching and Research in Economics, Business and Law, in Vietnam (Can Tho University). In 2006 he defended his PhD thesis on Estate Settlement. Kolkman is joint editor-in-chief of a number of periodicals and of a series on civil (notarial) law: Family Law, Estate Settlement, Real Property Law and Company Law. He is involved in research on ‘Land tenure security for agricultural growth and rural poverty reduction in China and Vietnam’, and on the ‘Protection of indigenous property rights to land in Indonesia’. He has strong skills in training civil law notaries and other practitioners in both family law, land law and other related issues, both in the Netherlands and abroad. For instance, he participates in the project ‘Building blocks for the rule of law’ by lecturing staff members of different leading Indonesian universities on the subject of land law.
From 2007-2010, he was a member of the board of the Centre for Development Studies of the University of Groningen. He is a member of the International Alliance on Land Tenure and Administration, founded in Groningen. He also is a member of the Comparative Succession Law Group. In 2013 he is a visiting professor at the University of Western Ontario, Canada (James G. McLeod Professor in Family Law). Apart from his work at the University, he has a position at Elan Notarissen and he is deputy justice in the Court of Appeal at Arnhem.
