LLM Energy and Climate Law Students Went To Brussels

22 March 2019

On 18-19 March 2019 students of the LLM Energy and Climate Law visited Brussels under the supervision of Dr Ruven Fleming and Lea Diestelmeier. The two-day trip was part of the course Energy Investment and Trade Law within the LLM Energy and Climate Law.

On the first day the group visited the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) Secretariat. They were welcomed by Dr Ernesto Bonafe and other ECT staff on the premises of the secretariat. The topics discussed covered the role and function of the Energy Charter Treaty, the 2015 International Energy Charter, Investment Protection under the Energy Charter Treaty and the expansion of the Energy Charter process to Azerbaijan and Yemen.

On the second day the students met at the representation of Benelux-countries in Brussels. The Director of the Internal Market and Economy section of the Secretariat-General Jan Molema and his staff presented the mission and vision of the Benelux with a view to energy and climate issues and presented the latest initiatives of the Benelux states with a particular emphasis on hydrogen.

His presentation was followed by a talk of Jeffery Piper, senior political analyst at the Directorate General Energy of the European Commission, who discussed the EU´s external energy policy with the students. Both speakers shared valuable insights into their personal working-routine and gave interesting insights into how these big organizations are working.

The two day trip was part of the LLM Energy and Climate Law curriculum. More information on the LLM can be found here.
