PleitVRij and Learning with VR: The next level

PleitVRij is an innovative educational project and partnership of the University of Groningen, the VU of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht. It is part of SURF's Open and Online Education Incentive Scheme, for which the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has made grants available since 2019.

At the three universities, PleitVRij enables law students to practice pleading, using Virtual Reality glasses. Once students put on the VR glasses, they see a virtual representation of the old court in the Oude Boteringestraat in Groningen. Within that environment, students can learn to plead better, have the opportunity to practice more and receive targeted feedback - all in an authentic setting.

Students perform various roles that recur in a courtroom (lawyer/judge/prosecutor). To provide peer feedback, an app is being developed that allows students from the three universities to provide real-time feedback to fellow students while pleading. These students watch on a screen, and through a split-screen, see two students meeting each other.
