Wilbert Kolkman appointed as new Dean of the Faculty of Law

29 September 2020

The Executive Board has appointed prof. Wilbert Kolkman as of October 1 as Dean of the Faculty of Law. The Faculty Board is very pleased with the appointment and looks forward to cooperating with the new Dean. Kolkman succeeds prof. Jan Berend Wezeman, who, after a period of ten years as Dean, will continue his commitment to the Faculty as Professor of Company Law and Commercial Law.

Prof. Wilbert Kolkman

Kolkman, professor of Legal Science and Family Property Law, has worked at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen since 2000. From 2006 to 2017 he was professor of private law, in particular notarial law. As of 2017 he holds the chair of Legal Science and Family Property Law. His research focuses mainly on the field of family property law, both in the Netherlands and in Europe. For his education he won several prizes and gained extensive experience abroad: he taught in Indonesia, China, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Canada, among others. Since 2017, he has also chaired the Department of General Law Studies and History of Law.

Kolkman: “A number of great challenges are just around the corner. The educational landscape shaken up by corona will take shape again. I want to prevent this from overloading the staff and offering sub-par education to the students. There are also great opportunities for research collaboration, both within the Faculty and between faculties. I am really looking forward to taking on these challenges. ”
