On Tuesday 4 February 2020 Laurence Gormley, Emeritus Professor of European Law at Groningen, was called as a Master of the Bench of the Middle Temple in London. Laurence was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1978 and in the same year was the first Bristow Scholar of the Inn.
The Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court (the others are Inner Temple, Lincoln’s Inn and Gray’s Inn) which call Barristers to the Bar of England and Wales. The Masters of the Bench (also known as Benchers) are the governing body of the Inn and consist of senior members of the Inn. These are Barristers who are eminent practitioners, or have been appointed as judges, or are distinguished legal academics, or are distinguished in other walks of life.
