New Online Summer Pre-LLM for the Governance and Law in Digital Society Programme

23 April 2020

This year, due to the Coronavirus, the Summer Pre-LLM for our LLM in Governance and Law in Digital Society will be offered online. As the programme is a unique hybrid of both law and the social sciences, applicants must have an LLB or equivalent with a minor in Social Sciences ( or a BSc in Social Sciences with a minor in Law) to be eligible for admission. For law students without the required social science minor, the Online Summer Pre-LLM is a convenient way to fill this void and pursue this specialized one-year LLM.

About this LLM Programme

Our world is digitalizing at high speed. The Corona crisis has aided this process, with an unparalleled increase in online communication and education. Governments were already visibly struggling with governance issues in a digital world: how to influence and regulate the strategy of platforms such as Uber, AirBnB and Booking.com when public order is at stake? How can governments themselves facilitate automated decision-making systems that make use of big data or algorithms? How are principles of good administration and transparency safeguarded in a digital society? These issues are highlighted by contemporary developments.

If you are interested in helping governments and businesses to answer these questions and contribute to a stable and innovative digital society, then the LLM Governance and Law in Digital Society is what you are looking for. This LLM is a programme from the Faculty of Law and taught at Campus Fryslân , the newest faculty of the University of Groningen located in Leeuwarden.

About the Online Summer Pre-LLM

The online courses commence in June, and between June and the beginning of August students can attend online lectures, tutorials, and live Q&A sessions. They are expected to work on assignments by themselves, with regular online supervision meetings. The final grades will depend on the course work and digital oral exams that take place in the third week of August. For those eligible for the Pre-LLM, the successful completion of the Pre-LLM leads to direct admission to the LLM, which begins in September 2020. You can read more about the Pre-LLM here.

Join our May 7th Webinar

There will be a special interactive webinar for the Governance and Law in Digital Society LLM on May 7th 2020, in which prospective students can learn more about the programme and can ask staff and students questions via chat.
