Other grants for study or placement abroad
Besides the Erasmus+ grant and the Marco Polo grant there are other grants available from different institutions. These grants may also be available for students that do not participate in one of our exchange programmes or go on an placement period abroad.
Groningen University Fund (GUF) – grants, field trips, etc.
Students who wish to spend their period abroad at a university with which there is no exchange agreement may be eligible for funding by the GUF. The GUF subsidizes various activities that benefit studies at the University of Groningen. Specific requirements and an application form can be found on the GUF website. The form gives details of the guidelines for applications for financial assistance. A supporting letter can be provided by the International Office.
Fund International Office
In some exceptional cases, when no other funds can support the student’s exchange period (or internship) abroad, a modest grant of the International Office Fund can be made available. Such a grant is not given to students who already receive an Erasmus+ or Marco Polo grant, or funding from other sources. Should you require more detailed information, please ask the International Office.
VSB Grant programme for study and research grants
The Stichting VSB Fonds offers grants to postgraduate students. VSB scholarships are intended to assist students who have graduated from a Dutch university to follow a programme (a Master’s degree, for instance) or conduct research abroad that will broaden or deepen their knowledge. The scholarship is not intended for a placement. Specific requirements and more information can be found on the VSB fonds website.
NL Scholarship
The NL Scholarship is a scholarship made available by the Dutch Ministry of Education Culture and Science together with Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. It is meant for students who want to study, do research or an internship outside the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA consists of the EU countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Specific requirements and more information can be found on the NL Scholarship website.
Fulbright grant for study or placement in the United States
The Fulbright Programme is an international (exchange) programme sponsored by the United States Government and is mainly aimed at early-career professionals, graduate students, PhD students or scholars. The specific conditions for qualification of the Fulbright programme can be found on www.fulbright.nl.
Grotius grants
The Stichting Grotius Academie is a foundation that provides postgraduate specialization courses for lawyers who already have some practical experience.
In June 2009, Stichting Grotius Academie for the first time awarded ten grants of €3000 to talented students from ethnic minorities and for the past years Groningen law students have been among these talented students.
The Grotius grant is intended as a stimulus for students from ethnic minorities, offering them the opportunity to study abroad or follow a placement abroad. In the context of their study at a university in the Netherlands, their time abroad should be spent on subjects related to the commercial law practice.
The most important conditions for to qualify for a Grotius grant are:

You must be among the top 25% of students, either at the end of year 2 of the Bachelor phase or at the end of the Bachelor phase, and

You are from an ethnic minority, and
-
You are going on a placement or are going to study at a university abroad for at least two months. Your placement or study will be in the field of commercial law.
