This seminar is part of the seminar series Human Rights in Essential Public Service Provision, presented by the Groningen Centre for Law and Governance and the Groningen International School of Law.
Private actors play an increasingly crucial role in the financing and delivery of essential public services. In this seminar we will explore the challenges and opportunities created by private public service provision.
The seminar will pay attention to the privatization of these services and the shift of the role of governments in directly providing them towards a more regulatory role.
It will also aim at discussing the relevance of human rights standards with respect to these issues. To this end, practical topics, such as the role of regulatory agencies, self-regulation, and accountability (both for deficient service provision as for defective regulation) will be explored.
