John Morijn mentioned on UN-website about reform of UN human rights treaty monitoring

31 January 2012

In the context of the UN, one of the main methods of protecting human rights is through so-called human rights monitoring. Initiatives to rationalise this system of human rights protection have witnessed a new dynamism over the last five years. Consultations have taken place amongst academics, treaty body members, NGOs and National Human Rights Institutions, and various sets of recommendations and proposals for reform have been published. After further consultation sessions with States in early 2012, the OHCHR is expected to propose a new set of measures to alter the modus operandi of UN human rights treaty monitoring. A critical article on the subject by assistant professor of human rights law John Morijn was published on the European Journal of International Law blog and on the website of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in January 2012.
