Writers and Readers of the Pharetra fidei: An Arsenal of Information

The collection of texts generally referred to as the Pharetra fidei was written in and copied from the fourteenth to sixteenth century. The texts, which consist of a refutation of the Talmud and an explanation of the truth of the Christian faith, were exceptionally popular. Kaeppeli identifies 137 manuscripts in total, though research has already identified fifty-eight more, among which four vernacular witnesses. This lecture will focus on the contextual information that can be derived from the manuscripts. Travel companions, colophons, readers’ marks, annotations, etc. all reveal how the Pharetra fidei was produced and consumed by diverse local communities.

Loïs Bakker is a PhD researcher at the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society of the University of Groningen. During her Research Master in Religious Studies she became acquainted with the late medieval anti-Jewish Pharetra fidei, which captured her attention immediately. She wrote her MA thesis on the Dialogus pro Ecclesia contra Synagogam, one of the versions of the Pharetra fidei, and continues studying the text in its historical context for her PhD.

This event is part of the Religion, Culture and Society public lecture series 2024-2025.
