XR HUB January 18: using VR in classroom management secondary education and body image in anorexia nervosa
During the XR Hub meeting on Thursday, January 18, two practical examples of the application of XR in education and research will be discussed.
In the context of classroom management in secondary education, students practice in a virtual classroom and the negative body image in anorexia nervosa is unraveled using virtual reality. Visualization experts from the CIT provide support for the projects that are discussed.
Location and time
- The XR-HUB will take place at the Heymans Building, Grote Kruisstraat 2/1, Groningen.

VR in classroom management in secondary education | Ricus Dullaert, Marjon Fokkens-Bruinsma, Anina Westgeest (Teacher Education, Faculty BSS)
How can Teacher Education students practice more classroom management? In a virtual environment of course!
Following the success of the virtual kindergarten class in the Academic PABO, a version has now been created for secondary education. This allows students to practice in a virtual environment with a class in secondary education. Next year this will be implemented in the curriculum of the first grade teacher training at the University of Groningen.

Unraveling body image in anorexia nervosa with virtual reality | Klaske Glashouwer, Fleur Boonstra (Psychology, Faculty BSS)
Participants are exposed to their own bodies in different sizes in a VR environment. This is done using personalized realistic avatars created with the software program Character Creator. By using an Azure Kinect camera to synchronize movements, we aim to maximize the sense of "embodiment" so participants perceive the avatar's body as their own. In the VR setting, participants see their virtual body when looking down and when looking in the mirror in front of them, allowing us to measure how they respond to exposure towards their virtual body in various sizes.
XR HUB
The XR Hub organizes bi-monthly meetings for faculty and researchers at the University of Groningen to share knowledge and experiences on the development and use of applications of Extended Reality: augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), virtual reality (VR) and 3D.
