KNAW Early Career Award for Charlotte Knowles

21 November 2023

Charlotte Knowles, researcher at the Faculty of Philosophy, receives an Early Career Award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). She receives the award for her research on deep-rooted issues in gender dynamics. The award is intended for young researchers in the Netherlands who have innovative, original research ideas.

Charlotte Knowles

‘Complicity’ of women

Knowles is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the UG. Her work combines feminist philosophy with existentialism and phenomenology. How is it that women sometimes vote for politicians with misogynist views or participate in activities that emphasise their submissive role? In order to explore such questions, Knowles applies existential and phenomenological perspectives. Freedom and autonomy – but also precisely the fear of both – are often at the centre of this. She brings to light innovative and fruitful insights for better understanding women’s ‘complicity’ in gender issues.

The Early Career Award comprises an amount of €15,000 and a unique artwork.
