Erasmus+ funding for Avraamidou and Azevedo

21 September 2022

Prof. Lucy Avraamidou and Dr. Nathalia H. Azevedo of the Institute for Science Education and Communication ( ISEC ) are coordinators in a project funded by the Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership program of the European Commission. Their project has the title ‘ Sustainable Mobility through STEM Education’ (SMILE). SMILE aims to raise awareness of the greenhouse gas emissions from transport and support citizens in acting responsibly towards sustainable mobility.

As part of the project, the partners will develop a toolkit which includes curriculum materials and professional development for university lecturers and high school teachers. With this toolkit, teachers can implement activities related to climate change with a focus on sustainable mobility. The SMILE consortium will develop a practical guide for educators, an e-learning platform and blended learning modules, digital escape rooms and a training curriculum. It will do so through an interdisciplinary, design-based approach to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) teaching.

The total budget for the project is EUR 250,000. Avraamidou and Azevedo receive EUR 65,000 for their part in the project. The consortium consists of partners from Ireland, Cyprus, Portugal, Greece and the Netherlands. For the purpose of the project, ISEC will work closely with Prof. Antonis Vakis (Engineering and Technology institute Groningen – ENTEG) and members of the Professionalization and Innovation in Education (PIE) team.
