First results of the 2022 NSE released

The first results of the 2022 National Student Survey (NSE) have been released. Twenty-nine percent of UG students completed the survey. In 2021, this figure was 37%. Such a decline is also visible at other universities: from an average of 37% in 2021 to 30% in 2022. The NSE is sent annually to all students in the Dutch higher education system.

The NSE was revised in 2021, since when it has comprised a general part (which is the same for all universities) and a flexible part (in which universities may choose from a number of topics). The UG results of the general part have now been released.

In total, the general part comprised 50 questions categorized into seven topics. Students answered 46 of the 50 questions with a score of 3.5 or higher, on a scale from 1 to 5. This is a positive result for the UG. In comparison with the previous year, students are, on average, generally just as satisfied with their degree programmes (2022: 3.82, 2021: 3.83). Students are more satisfied with the atmosphere within their programme than in the previous year (2022: 3.96, 2021: 3.86), and are also more satisfied with the study facilities (2022: 3.91, 2021: 3.62). This appears to be a result of the dissolution of the coronavirus measures: more and more teaching has been held on site, enabling students to see one another more often and, in addition, actually make use of the study facilities.

Comparison with national average

In general, the UG scored slightly lower than the national average on the various topics. When comparing the UG scores with the national averages, the difference is often only in the hundredths. The biggest challenge for the UG is still the connection to the professional field/job market (3.18), which is also the case for other universities. Questions that the UG scored highly on (>4.0) predominantly relate to lecturers: UG students are highly satisfied with the expertise of lecturers (4.31), with the opportunities offered by lecturers to ask questions (4.05), and with the availability of lecturers (4.02). On this last point, UG students even gave a higher score than the national average.

How will the results be used?

The NSE results will be used by degree programmes to signal and monitor points for improvement. The results will also be discussed in consultations held with students, including in the faculty councils and the University Council. In this way, the results will contribute to improving teaching at the UG. After the summer, a detailed report of the NSE results—including the results from the flexible part of the survey—will be shared with the faculties and the University Council.
