8 March: Presentation of the Aletta Jacobs Prize and opening of the renovated Aletta Jacobs Room in the University Museum

01 March 2018

On Thursday 8 March, Ms Lilianne Ploumen will be presented with the Aletta Jacobs Prize 2018 by the University of Groningen (UG). Preceding the ceremony, the renovated Aletta Jacobs Room in the University Museum will be officially opened. This is also the moment at which the Groningen University Museum will officially become a member of the national Canon Network. Part of the ceremony will be the presentation of iconic treasures of Dutch History, which from 8 March will form a permanent part of the Canon of the Netherlands, and which from that moment in time will be on show in the renovated Spreekkamer van Aletta Jacobs [Aletta Jacobs surgery].

Canon Network
The Aletta Jacobs Room in the University Museum will form part of the Canon of the Netherlands , 50 display cases guiding visitors through the most important events, individuals and objects that have made the Netherlands what it is today. A growing number of museums are throwing the spotlight on iconic treasures and organizing special activities related to the Canon, thus highlighting the versatility of our history. The Canon Network is an initiative of the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem, which houses a recently opened overview presentation of the Canon. The nationwide collaboration is supported by the Mondriaan Fund, the K.F. Hein Fund and the Gravin van Bylandt Foundation.

College Tour
The evening before the presentation of the Aletta Jacobs Prize, Wednesday 7 March 2018, the Master’s students of the Honours College will be organizing a College Tour event in honour of Lilianne Ploumen in the Aula of the Academy Building. Students will have the opportunity to meet Ms Ploumen and ask her questions about her life, achievements and career. The host for the evening will be Dr Els Maeckelberghe, medical ethicist at the UMCG.
UG students can reserve a place and submit questions for the College Tour.
The submitted questions will be divided into four categories: career, personal, ‘She Decides’ and future perspectives. The organization will choose the most interesting and original questions from each of these categories to be asked during the event.
