Theunis Piersma nominated for the Huibregtsen Prize

15 June 2017

Professor Theunis Piersma, professor of Global Flyway Ecology at the University of Groningen, has been nominated for the Huibregsten Prize 2017 for his research project ‘studying and protecting birds that link the Netherlands with the world’. The jury chose six research projects, including Piersma’s, from the 24 submissions. Together with an international research team, Piersma studies the ways in which the distribution and populations of wading birds and meadow birds are related to climate, food, predators, pathogens and historical genetic conditions. Theunis Piersma was awarded the prestigious Spinoza Prize for this work in 2014.

The research leader of the winning project will be presented with the prize – € 25,000 – by Minister of Education, Culture and Sciences Jet Bussemaker in the Ridderzaal in The Hague on 9 October. Read the jury report.

About the Huibregtsen Prize

The Huibregtsen Prize was established in 2005 by the board of the Stichting De Avond van Wetenschap & Maatschappij (Night of Science & Society Foundation), in honour of Wouter Huibregtsen. The prize is awarded to a recent research project that breaks new scientific ground and is socially relevant. The jury of experts is appointed by the board of the Foundation.

Each year a minimum of four and a maximum of eight projects are nominated, one of which will be awarded the prize during the Night of Science & Society in the Ridderzaal in The Hague. The prize comprises a sculpture, De Denker (The Thinker) by Wil van der Laan, and the sum of € 25,000, earmarked for research activities.
