‘Open up to open access’ campaign kicks off

15 May 2017

The ‘Open up to open access’ campaign kicked off on 15 May. The campaign, supported by VSNU (Association of Universities in the Netherlands), aims to stimulate academics to publish their articles as open access. The University of Groningen considers open access to be extremely important and has therefore joined the campaign.

Making articles open access has many advantages. Articles are easier to find, thus expanding their reach and making the number of citations grow. In addition, the UG thinks it is important for the results of research to be freely available to the general public so that they can access high-quality information.

The UG believes that participating in the ‘Open up to open access’ campaign will draw academics’ attention to the possibilities of open access and encourage its use. Since 1 January 2017, the UG has offered its researchers the opportunity to make their output available in open access via the ‘green route’.
