Student Roel Boomstra world champion in draughts
Roel Boomstra has won the title of world champion in draughts. The 23-year old University of Groningen physics student defeated his 18-year old rival Jan Groenendijk. Boomstra managed to win the first, fifth, eighth and tenth match of the tournament, which brought him far ahead of Groenendijk, who did not succeed in winning a single match.
Boomstra is the first Dutch world champion in draughts since 1984, when the title was awarded to Harm Wiersma. Since then the title has consistently gone to the Soviet Union/Russia. Boomstra became Dutch champion in draughts in 2012 and 2015, and European champion in 2014. He also finished third in the World Championship in 2013 and 2015. The tournament for the 2016 world title was played at four different locations. The University of Groningen hosted the opening and the first four matches.
