RUG expands into Drenthe

05 January 2015

The University of Groningen is opening an auxiliary branch in Drenthe. Starting in academic year 2016/2017, the University will be providing a new Master’s degree programme in Advanced Instrumentation mainly at Astron in Dwingeloo. At this institute for radio astronomy students will learn how to apply their knowledge of mechanical engineering and electrical engineering to large-scale projects. Jan de Jeu, Vice Chair of the Board of the University of Groningen, is pleased about the expansion to Drenthe: ‘We have always regarded ourselves as the university of the north, and the branch in Drenthe underlines this. The collaboration with Astron will offer our students wonderful graduation project opportunities. I can see more prospects for working with the high-tech industry in Drenthe in the future too, for example Fokker in Hoogeveen and the chemical industry in Emmen.’
