University of Groningen truly turns 400 on 23 August

The University of Groningen spent the four weeks from 15 May to 15 June celebrating its 400th anniversary – a fantastic month brimming with small and larger-scale festivities. But the real 400th anniversary is on 23 August, the date on which the University of Groningen was founded. The University will mark this official anniversary during the night of 22 August.
The Grand Finale of the anniversary celebrations will take place on Broerplein with a short festive programme lasting from 11.30 p.m. until around 1 a.m., which will include a midnight toast to the University. King’s Commissioner Max van den Berg and Mayor Ruud Vreeman will present Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken with a copy of the book 400 jaar Universiteit Groningen; van 1614 tot 2014 by Beno Hofman.
Unveiling the work of art
A work of art by Peter Musschenga entitled SHA_RE will be unveiled in the stairwell of the University Library building at 11.30 p.m. This work of art is a gift to the 400-year-old University from the Groningen University Fund. Guests will be given an opportunity to inspect and admire the artwork after midnight. A smaller exhibition in the Library explains more about ‘the making of’ the work of art.
Anniversary
Just before the real anniversary of the University of Groningen begins, an ‘after-movie’ will be shown to remind everyone of all the wonderful activities organized to celebrate this momentous event. The University of Groningen is proud to have welcomed more than 150,000 visitors. But the true Dies (anniversary) will be ushered in at midnight with a toast and a bang.
International students and alumni
A special programme has been organized at 5 p.m. for international students and alumni, to give them an opportunity to join the celebrations. They will be invited to exhibitions in the Groninger Museum and the University Museum, and to watch the film For Infinity – The Movie.

Commemorative medal
In an official part of the proceedings, Rector Magnificus Sterken will be presented with a 400th anniversary commemorative medal made by artist Marina van der Kooi. The medal is a gift from the Representation Fund.
