University of Groningen to open teaching location in Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden has gained a new degree programme and the University of Groningen a new teaching location. As of September 2014, the international Master’s specialization in Multilingualism will be taught at Tresoar in Leeuwarden.
The Minister of Education, Culture and Science recently approved Leeuwarden as a teaching location for the international Master’s specialization in Multilingualism. The entire one-year programme will be taught in Leeuwarden. On completion, students will be awarded a Master of Arts diploma in Linguistics from the University of Groningen.
Multilingualism
The Multilingualism programme focuses on every facet of multilingualism, which is seen as one the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Increasing globalization and digitization are making it crucial for people from different countries and cultures to understand each other. Should we value linguistic and cultural diversity or should we aspire to unity for the sake of common understanding?
Last year, 12 students from 8 different countries took the Master’s specialization.
The Master’s specialization in Multilingualism will (like the Bachelor’s programme in Minorities & Multilingualism) be run by the Department of Frisian Language and Culture of the University of Groningen, and partly funded by the Province of Friesland as part of the University Campus Fryslân.
