26 June 2014

Campus Winschoten has won the Wubbo Ockels Prize 2.0. This will be the second time that the prize for the most sustainable school in the northern Netherlands is awarded. The winning school receives the sum of EUR 10,000, made available by the NHL University of Applied Sciences, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Stenden University and the University of Groningen.

The jury of the Wubbo Ockels Prize was impressed by the versatility of the Winschoten school. Over the last few years, it has set up numerous projects to raise awareness about sustainability. The jury also praised the strong engagement of the pupils. They are at the forefront at Campus Winschoten and lead the sustainable projects. Campus Winschoten is a partnership between the Dollard College, Noorderpoort and AOC Terra schools.

Prize money

Campus Winschoten intends to use the prize money to ensure that sustainability continues to have an important role in the curriculum in the future. The school hopes to invest some of the money in tablets to use in the sustainability projects. It is also laying the foundations for a ‘House of the Future’. In the coming years, pupils, the school and the business community will work to make this extremely sustainable house a poster child for the school.

In memory of Wubbo Ockels

Wubbo Ockels, the first Dutch astronaut, was involved in the launch of the prize last year. It was his particular desire to direct the prize at schools and schoolchildren. Ockels was also involved in the preparations this year. The jury is pleased that a worthy winner has once again been found for the prize.
