Alumnus Wim Pijbes Dutchman of the Year
Wim Pijbes, director of the Rijksmuseum and alumnus of the University of Groningen, has been named Dutchman of the Year by Elsevier. According to the Elsevier editorial board, Pijbes’ inspired leadership has lifted the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam out of the current crisis.
Two million
‘In 2013, all eyes were focused on Pijbes,’ says Elsevier. ‘Initially in the run-up to the reopening, when he took over the final phase of the restoration and refurbishment work. This was followed by the grand opening itself, which earned jubilant reviews in the Dutch press and in particular the international press. And then of course, there was the public acclaim.’ Since the reopening eight months ago, Pijbes’ museum has welcomed more than two million visitors, a tally that used to take two years.
Art History Alumnus
Wim Pijbes studied Art History at the University of Groningen. In June 2013, the University awarded him the title Alumnus of the Year. Pijbes won this accolade for the way he brought Dutch cultural heritage to the attention of a broad national and international public. The jury was particularly impressed by his innovative approach, his aspiration for the highest quality and his singular creativity.
