University of Groningen breaks into Shanghai Ranking Top 100

15 August 2013

The University of Groningen has risen to 92nd place in the Shanghai Ranking list this year. This ranking list (Academic Ranking of World Universities, ARWU) is regarded as the most reliable quality indicator for universities worldwide. This is the first time that Groningen has broken into the Top 100.

The University of Groningen breakthrough was even considered worthy of a separate mention in ARWU press release announcing the publication of the new 2013 ranking list. There are now twelve Dutch universities in the ARWU Top 500, three of them in the top 100.

In addition to the general classification, the University of Groningen also achieved top 100 ranking in a number of specific scientific fields: Life and Agriculture Sciences (76-100), Social Science (76-100), Chemistry (51-75) and Economics (76-100).

ARWU

The ARWU is a list of the global Top 500, published annually by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Because the list is based on clear methodology and objective data, it is regarded as the most reliable in the academic world. It is not often that shifts in ranking occur.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has often expressed the wish that more Dutch universities would break into the absolute world top. President of the Board of the University of Groningen Sibrand Poppema is very pleased that the performance of his university has significantly improved in comparison with other universities. ‘We are now one of the elite group of Top 100 research universities in the most prestigious ranking list.’

In the World University Rankings 2012-2013, published by the British journal Times Higher Education, the University of Groningen is classified at 89th place in the Top 100.
