University of Groningen coordinator Erasmus Mundus project with Latin America

The European Commission has granted the coordination of a new prestigious Erasmus Mundus Action 2 (EMA2) project with Latin America to the University of Groningen. The consortium ‘EURICA’ (EUrope and ameRICA: Enhancing University Relationships by Investing in Cooperative Actions) has budgeted a total of 4.3 million mainly to be spent on excellence scholarships for student and researcher mobility between selected countries in the two regions.

The programme is coordinated by the University of Groningen together with long-time partner Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Mobility numbers

EURICA foresees a total of 292 mobility flows for students, researchers and staff on all levels (bachelor, master, PhD, post-doctoral and staff) from both target countries in Latin America to EU partners (192) as well as vice versa (100). Mobility will take place in three different cohorts in the period 2014-2017.

Students and researchers in a broad range of academic fields may apply: Agricultural Sciences; Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning; Business Studies and Management Sciences; Education, Teacher Training; Engineering, Technology; Geography, Geology; Law; Mathematics, Informatics; Medical Sciences; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences; Communication and Information Sciences; Public Administration, Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Human Rights

Project implementation

The first call for applications is envisaged to open in October 2013 for mobility to start in 2014 and a dedicated website will be launched by late September.

Other projects

The University of Groningen has experience with the coordination of previous EMA2 projects in Mexico (2008), Mexico & Central America (2009), Argentina (2011), and South Africa (2012).

-         LOTUS IV (coordinator Ghent University, Belgium) for cooperation with Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam

-         NAMASATE (coordinator, University of Goettingen, Germany) for cooperation with India
