Jurian Langer appointed Professor European law and the Dutch legal order
On 1 February 2013 Dr. Jurian Langer was appointed Professor in European law and the Dutch legal order, by means of the Foundation ‘Bevordering Europees en economisch recht’.
The focus of the chair is the application of European law in the Dutch legal order. Langer will aim his research and teachings at the role of national judges when applying European law. He will focus on how national judges interpret and apply the case law of the European Court of Justice regarding in particular European citizenship and EU-Charter of fundamental rights.
Langer has an ‘European’ professional and academic background. He works in the European law section of the legal department of the Dutch Foreign Office. He acts as a legal agent for the Dutch government in proceedings before the European Court of Justice in all matters related to EU-law. Before joining the Foreign Office, he was an attorney at Stek (Amsterdam) and Stibbe (Amsterdam and Brussels).
Langer graduated in 1997 from the University of Groningen with a specialisation in international and European law. He holds a PhD from the prestigious European University Institute, an LLM from University College London and a specialised degree in law and economics from the University of Hamburg. He taught EU-law at the University of Amsterdam and Groningen as well as in other member states (Bulgaria, Estonia), and publishes regularly on EU-law.
