The research for Margreet Wolters’s dissertation arose from the NWO/VNC-funded project ‘Underdrawing and artistic concept: the practice in the Aertsen/Beuckelaer workshops (1550-1575)’, which was primarily concerned with the working methods and workshop practices of Pieter Aertsen (Amsterdam, 1508/09-1575) and his nephew and pupil Joachim Beuckelaer (Antwerp, c. 1535-c. 1575). The aim of this project was to gain greater insight, mainly with the aid of infra-red reflectography (IRR), into the conceptual and craft aspects of the practice in Antwerp and Amsterdam workshops in the second half of the 16th century, in particular into the origins of a new genre in painting, the market and kitchen scene. For the dissertation of Wolters Joachim Beuckelaer’s work was central, with the focus on the underdrawing within the creative process. In eleven articles - some published, some not - the dissertation deals with various aspects of Beuckelaer’s working method, production and workshop, with most of the new insights coming from analysis of the IRR material.
