The intake of an excess of dietary salt is related to the development of cardiovascular and renal disease. Therefore, restriction of the amount of salt in our diet deserves top-prority in order to prevent these conditions. However, also other risk factors are important in the development of cardiovascular and renal disease like obesity, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. That is why the effects of dietary salt restriction should be assessed in relation to these other risk factors. In this thesis, we prove that there exists an interaction between salt and volume regulation on the one hand and metabolic factors on the other hand. This confirms our initial hypothesis that it is important to assess the different factors that are involved in the development of cardiovascular and renal disease in an integrated way.
