Skin problems of the stump in lower limb amputees
Skin problems of the stump in lower limb amputees are a common problem. In literature, evidence concerning incidence and prevalence is scarce.
Determinants which have an influence on skin problems of the stump were investigated by means of a questionnaire. In total, 63% of the participants reported a skin problem. Older age, male gender, and peripheral arterial disease and/or diabetes decreased the odds of having a skin problem. Use of antibacterial soap, smoking, and washing the stump 4 times a week or more, increased the odds. It was concluded that the latter mentioned determinants need to be studied for their clinical relevance. Furthermore, it was investigated whether the presence of a skin problem had an influence on level of participation (especially vocation and hobbies). Participants responded that skin problems had a negative influence on household tasks, social functioning, and performing sports. Skin problems decreased the time which a prosthesis could be worn.
