Two regional science awards for Groningen economists
Paul Elhorst, Annette Zeilstra and Maarten Bosker, economists of the Faculty of Economics and Business,won a paper and a thesis prize of the Regional Science Association International (RSAI), an international community of scholars interested in the regional impacts of national or global processes of economic and social change.
They were presented the awards at the 54th Annual North American Meetings of the RSAI, at the New York Federal Reserve Bank on Thursday, November 20.
With about 650 participants and quests from all over the world, the 2008 RSAI meetings of 19-22 November were the largest Regional Science Conference in the Western hemisphere ever.
Paul Elhorst and Annette Zeilstra received the Martin Beckmann prize for the best paper in the journal Papers in Regional Science 2007. The title of their paper is "Labour force participation rates at the regional and national levels of the European Union: An integrated analysis". According to the jury, Elhorst and Zeilstra managed to make a good estimation with a rare economic model. The prize consists of a plaque and 500 British pounds.
Maarten Bosker received the Best Thesis in Regional Science Award for his thesis "The empirical relevance of geographical economics". His supervisors were H. Garretsen (FEB) and M. Schramm (University of Utrecht). Bosker was awarded the travelling expenses and accommodation at one of the next meetings of the RSAI.
