Open Access & Open Science

What exactly is Open Access? And how does it relate to Open Science? Whereas Open Access focuses on publications, Open Science goes a step further and aims for broader accessibility and collaboration within and outside academia. The Open UG actively supports and encourages both initiatives.

Open Access means free and permanent access to academic publications, allowing readers to consult, disseminate and reuse them without restrictions.

The UB's open access team advises on everything to do with open access - or, more broadly, open science - (funds, publisher deals, discounts, but also copyright and recognising predatory publishers).

Open Science strives to make academic research and education accessible, with the aim of improving its dissemination. Open Science creates new opportunities for interaction, collaboration and engagement between academia and society.

Open research practices encompass the entire research process and teaching, such as pre-registration of research, open research materials, FAIR data, open software and code, open access publications, open teaching tools and public engagement.
