As of 1 September, adjusted opening hours and extended UG-only periods in the UB City Centre
Last December, the University Library (UB) City Centre launched a pilot to save energy. Following an interim evaluation of the pilot, it has been decided to adjust the opening hours as of 1 September and to extend the so-called UG-only periods around the exam weeks.
The evaluation shows that the pilot has been successful, resulting in a 10-15% reduction in gas and electricity consumption. In addition, the UB City Centre has analyzed the occupancy of study places throughout the academic year. As a result, the UB City Centre will adjust its opening hours as of 1 September to better meet the needs of visitors while taking energy efficiency into account.
Extended UG-only periods
Based on the occupancy figures, the so-called UG-only periods around the exam weeks will also be significantly extended. In addition, the building will stay open on public holidays that fall within or around a UG-only period.
Adjusted opening hours
As of 1 September 2023, the UB City Centre will be open:
Monday to Thursday: 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Around exam weeks, during the UG-only period, opening hours will remain:
Monday to Sunday: 8:30 a.m.-00:00 a.m.
The next UG-only period is: Saturday 14 October - Wednesday 8 November
Closure of floors during quiet periods
The occupancy analysis also shows periods with low visitor numbers, e.g., holidays around Christmas and New Year and summer vacations. To save energy during these quieter periods, it has been decided to temporarily close one or more floors.
