Meet Doetsje Brouwer, Pure Support Specialist
"Every year, more than 10,000 publications by UG authors pass through our hands. We continuously improve Pure to increase the findability of research results and to relieve researchers as much as possible in the registration of their research output."
Pure is the research information system of the University of Groningen in which researchers register their research output. The University Library (UB) is responsible for this system and supports UG staff in working with Pure. Doetsje Brouwer, Pure Support Specialist, illustrates how.
What is your role as Pure Support Specialist?
I see myself as the linchpin for Pure Support. I manage the Pure Support team, oversee all activities and respond to new developments.
Who is the Pure Support team?
The Pure Support team consists of functional and application administrators, a validation team and information specialists. The functional and application administrators ensure that Pure runs smoothly. The validation team checks all research output that was imported and ensures that it is visible on the profile pages of researchers and on the UG research portal. Information specialists support the faculty Pure coordinators and organize Pure workshops for (new) UG staff.
What kind of support do you offer for academic staff?
A great deal happens behind the scenes to relieve researchers as much as possible in registering and sharing their research output. All the output shown is checked and complemented by the validation team, such as adding full-texts, making publications open access if possible and sharing publications via request-a-copy. While this work may be less visible, more than 10,000 publications a year pass through our hands.
Recently, new open access procedural regulations for short academic works were introduced. We ensure that all eligible publications are made available open access six months after publication. This requires no action from researchers.
Furthermore, we continuously improve Pure to increase the findability of research results. For example, we recently started importing Press/Media items into Pure daily, and since this month we also import the metadata of UG datasets registered in external repositories.
Finally, we offer workshops (every two weeks, currently only online) for new and current staff to familiarize themselves with the Pure system and we answer questions that come in via pure rug.nl.
What is the advantage of registering research output in Pure?
Everything a researcher registers in Pure is shown on the UG research portal and on his/her profile page, and is easily found by search engines such as Google.
What is your number one tip for academic staff who use Pure?
I have 3:
- Add your ORCID iD to Pure, or if you don't have one yet, create one;
- follow a webinar if you are not or less familiar with Pure, because this is a very quick way to learn all the ins and outs of Pure and
- if you have any questions, contact us via pure rug.nl and we will ensure that you receive an answer, often even the same day.
