Biography

Harmen de Vos (Kortezwaag, 11 may 1896 – Groningen, 5 august 1980) was a philosopher and a protestant theologist. De Vos attended the HBS and passes his state exams, upon which he started studying theology at Leiden University. He attended the University between 1917 and 1923. In 1927 he received his doctorate in religious studies, with a dissertation on the religious philosophy of Max Scheler. His supervisor was Professor H.T. de Graaf. De Vos then worked as a reform ‘predikant’ (preacher) in Akersloot, Rottevalle and Sneek for several years. Between 1939 and 1945, he was a private teacher of modern philosophy connected to the University of Groningen. From 1946 until 1948 he taught at the University of Amsterdam. He held a sponsored chair on Dutch Reform theology and a full professorship of Biblical theology, Christian ethics, applied theology and Dutch Reform church law. When he left this position, he was succeeded by Professor E.L. Smelik. In 1948 he became a Professor at the University of Groningen, teaching philosophy, ethics and religious philosophy. He held this position until his retirement in 1966, when it was transferred to his former student Hubertus G. Hubbeling.

The archive was given to the University Library in 2020 thanks to the mediation of Professor Wouter Slob, Zuidlaren.
