Provenance and acquisition

Biography

Dick Leutscher (1931-2013) was a musicologist from Groningen. After having taught at the two major music schools in Groningen for many years, he was named an honorary citizen of the town on 12 September 2006. Leutscher was well versed in the cultural arts. He was a member of many cultural clubs and organizations, as well as a member of the PvdA (Dutch labour party).

He was nominated for an honorary citizenship on the back of his dedication to a wide array of cultural arts. He was a student, a teacher and a lover of art in all shapes and sizes. Leutscher kept up with the developments in the arts scene and balanced a practical approach with an instinctually driven one.

Milestones in Leutscher’s life were his protests against the demolition of the concert hall ‘De Harmonie’. This concert hall emulated the shape and acoustics of the Wiener Musik Verein. His efforts were, however, in vain. Leutscher was also a driving force behind the career and work of the Groningen painter and poet Hendrik de Vries, as well as the art movement De Ploeg.

Throughout his life he worked first as a musician, both as a solo artist and accompanying other musicians. Later, he became a teacher at the recreational school of music in Groningen, before moving to the higher music school. He was also involved in many theatre shows, advising producers and directors. Notably, he was responsible for facilitating a play written by Gerard Reve, leading to a successful further career for Reve.
