Provenance and acquisition
Biography
Pieter Jan Kuijjer was born April 7, 1921 in Amsterdam. His father Dr I.H. Kuijjer was a surgeon. Kuijjer started studying medicine in Leiden just before the start of the second world war. He refused to sign the declaration of loyalty that was circulated by the Germans, and was arrested and made to work in Germany alongside many of his fellow students. After the war he resumed his studies; he passed the medical exam on January 17, 1947 in Leiden. He started doing research for his dissertation in the pathology laboratory of the municipal university of Amsterdam, under the supervision of Professor H.T. Deelman. On July 1, 1948 succesfully defended his dissertation entitled De ontwikkeling van het begrip tuberkel (‘the development of the concept tubercle’). After some time as a conscript in the army, Kuijjer started training to be a surgeon at the Wilhelmina Gasthuis in Amsterdam, 1950. His supervisor here was Professor I. Boerema.
In 1957 became the head of one of the two chirurgical wards at the Municipal Hospital on the Zuidwal, The Hague. In 1966 he succeeded Professor L.D. Eerland as the director and lead Professor at the University Hospital’s surgical department.
Kuijjer also had responsibilities surrounding the training of medical students at the University of Groningen. He appointed the first study coordinator and was an editor for the first edition of Leerboek chirurgie, an evergreen for Dutch medical students. He also published several smaller reference works, such as Chirurgisch onderzoek, as well as Inleiding in de chirurgie, an introductory work that was widely used by nurses and nursing students.
Kuijjer also had several ancillary jobs, all to do with his passion for the study of medicine. He was an editor for the periodical Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde (magazine for medicine), and a member of the periodical’s society. Besides his medical publications, he also wrote pieces about education, the development and appreciation of new surgical disciplines, and other such topics.
