Provenance and acquisition

          Biography

Etsko Kruisinga was a Dutch anglicist and grammarian. He gained international fame for his expertise       and publications about grammar, spelling and phonetics. He started his career in 1894 in Groningen,     studying English and Dutch at the University of Groningen.

He received his doctorate in 1904, under the guidance of Karl Daniel Bülbring, a German professor of       English language and linguistics. The doctorate was jointly awarded by the University of Groningen and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn. Kruisinga’s dissertation was entitled A Grammar of           the Dialect of West Somerset.

In 1922, Kruisinga became a teacher at a precursor to the School voor Taal- en Letterkunde (School for    language and linguistics) in the Hague, a training institute for future language teachers. In 1933 he   became headmaster at this school, and in 1936 he was awarded a professorship. He held both of these positions until his death in 1944.

Kruisinga was a founding member of the Vereniging van Leraren in Levende Talen (Society for language    teachers). After a disagreement with the society he started his own periodical Taal en Leven (Language   and life). Kruisinga was also an editor for the bi-monthly publication English Studies, A Journal of English         Language and Literature.

Kruisinga was a prolific scholar, publishing nearly twenty monographs and over 600 articles in his            career. His work is used to teach students across Europe, and is particularly popular in Germany.
