Biography

Jelle Hendriks Brouwer (23-8-1900, Beetsterzwaag) was a Frisian poet and philologist. On 28 may 1941 he defended his dissertation about Thet Autentica Riocht at the University of Groningen, with honours. This dissertation was an edition of an Old-Frisian text that he made by studying three manuscripts. His introduction was a brilliant synthesis of old and new information about the grey area between history of law and philology, which was a rarely studied discipline. What was novel about his approach was that he also studied the glosses of the manuscripts. His text was accompanied with useful commentary and an index of translated words, a conglomerate of canon and Roman law and a source for the knowledge of both Old Frisian and late medieval culture. Shortly after defending his dissertation, Brouwer became a professor of Frisian and Gothic.

After this, he was professor of Frisian language and literature in Groningen (1941-1956) and Amsterdam (1956-1962) as well as the scientific director of the Fryske Akademy in Leeuwarden (1956-1964).

He is regarded as one of the most important scholars and people of the Friese Beweging, Frisian literature and Frisian linguistics. He was the leader fo the Frysk Selskip as well as the Fryske Akademy among others.

He passed away 22 january 1981 in Leeuwarden.
