Biography
Jan Wiarda was born 5 march 1909 in Dordrecht. His father was a judge for the court in Amsterdam, and also served on the appellate court. Jan Wiarda studied law and received his doctorate in 1937 at the University of Amsterdam.
In 1935, Jan Wiarda started work as an attorney in Amsterdam. In 1946 he became a professor at the University of Groningen, teaching law.
Wiarda’s areas of interest were mainly civil law, family law and juvenile law. He was also interested in trade and commerce, civil procedures and conflict of laws. His most impactful work is widely considered to be his updated version of Mr C. Asser’s Handleiding tot de Beoefening van het Nederlandsch Burgerlijk Recht. Eerste stuk: natuurlijke personen en familierecht. (guide to the practise of Dutch civil law, first part: natural persons and family law).
Wiarda passed away in Groningen on 18 may 1993.

· Edit of the ninth edition of C. Asser, Handleiding tot de beoefening van het Nederlandsch burgerlijk recht, Zwolle 1957
· Several contributions to Revue trimestrielle de droit commercial, 1949, 1949-50, 1951.
Acquisition
The archive was transferred into the care of the University Library by Wiarda’s family in 1993.

No future additions to the archive are expected.
Contents and collation
This archive contains pieces concerning Wiarda’s doctorate and dissertation. Furthermore, it contains documents regarding functions he fulfilled in his professional career as an attorney in Amsterdam, Professor in Groningen, and interim judge in Groningen. Lastly, it contains some documents having to do with Wiarda being a member of several committees, correspondence and academic articles.
