Biography

Arisz (Utrecht, 2 February 1888 – Groningen, 20 June 1975) studied biology and became an assistant to professor A.A.W. Hubrecht before he even graduated. Shortly after his doctoral exam Arisz became an assistant to the medical fysiologist Zwaardemaker. He then worked in a laboratory in Bonn, under the German fysiologist Verworm. Although Arisz had started out his career as a zoologist, he decided to start writing a dissertation in the field of botany, more specifically phototropism.

After his promotion in 1914, Arisz became assistant to Gerrit Iterson, professor of technical botany in Delft. However, he left this position by 1915, to work as a botanist at the Bescoekisch Proefstation (laboratory) in Djember, on the island Java. In 1922 Dr A.J. Ultée left his position of director at the laboratory and the board named Arisz as his successor. By 1925 he was named professor in plant fysiology at the University of Groningen, succeeding T. Weevers.
