Atze Sijtsma
"My name is Atze Sijtsma, and I am a first-year student in the Research Master’s Archaeology programme. I was born and raised in Groningen, in the Netherlands. Growing up surrounded by medieval churches and terps, which are ancient Dutch dwelling mounds, sparked my early interest in studying archaeology.
During my bachelor’s degree, I realised my primary interest lies in academic research. I believe it is essential to synthesise perspectives and address contemporary socio-economic issues such as climate change and heritage education. In a conversation with my thesis supervisor, I recognised that the Research Master’s programme would be the ideal choice for me, and so far I am enjoying it immensely.
I specifically chose to pursue the Research Master’s programme in Groningen because it allows me to excel in my research interests. The elective component of the programme provides the opportunity to specialise in my field – for example, through a tutorial on the application of R in zooarchaeological data – and to gain a head start in research. Furthermore, it is a small-scale programme, where it is easy to collaborate with leading researchers."
The Groningen Institute of Archaeology offers world-class laboratories and reference collections that allow for specialisation in various sub-disciplines and career preparation in research.
"Ultimately, I would like to pursue a career in research and complete a PhD programme. At present, my focus is on gaining expertise in my research interests. I think it would be interesting to first gain experience in the extensive commercial archaeology sector in the Netherlands and engage with research questions in the field.
I would recommend prospective students to read up on Master’s programmes. For instance, attend virtual open days and speak to students to gain a clearer understanding of the programmes available and what they have to offer."
