Theories of Gender and Intersectionality (10 ECTS, 1a)

This course familiarises you with key theories and concepts in gender studies, including some of the most recent developments. We take the separation between sex and gender as our point of departure and continue to discuss various conceptualisations of gender relevant during the twentieth and twenty first century and in various disciplines and contexts. We do so by reading different source texts and discussing them together. We aim to look beyond conceptualisations of gender as a separate category from e.g. class, race, sexuality by going beyond the white western canon. Assessment will be through an exam and two smaller written assignments.

Researching Gender and Diversity (5 ECTS, 1a)

In this course you will be introduced to approaches to researching gender and diversity from a number of different disciplines, through lectures and readings by experts in these fields. We will also explore how such research can contribute to society. The course assessment is a research proposal, identifying a research question and an appropriate research methodology, and informed by literature relevant to the topic and method.

Gender and Sexuality: Contested Categories in a Global Perspective (5 ECTS, 1b)

This course examines how gender and sexuality are recognized and valued differently in various local, regional, and national contexts. Further, we explore the ways in which particular categories of gender, race, and sexuality draw upon the unique histories and experiences of groups and individuals are presented through a variety of disciplinary approaches including anthropology, ethnomusicology, sociology, media studies, religious studies, and philosophy. We focus on thematic fields such as media and technology; popular culture and music; healthcare; religion; globalization and economies; humanitarianism; and youth and welfare systems. Within each of these cases, we highlight different areas of the world including Eastern Europe, The Middle East, Northern Europe, Sub Saharan Africa, North America, and Latin America. Assessment of this course involves both intellectual and practical skills such as writing a blog and chairing a discussion as well as scholarly work such as reviewing an article and writing a final paper.

Gender and Diversity in the Workplace (10 ECTS, 1b)

How do norms of masculinity, heteronormativity, and racial bias affect workplace interactions, be it in the business office, classroom, consultation room, or at university? Why are some professions more white and male-dominated than others? In this course, we contribute to gender and diversity assessment of a current workplace or institution, which will be selected according to its relevance to your discipline. You will be introduced to key theoretical and methodological concepts that are catered towards assisting you in carrying out this assignment. Primarily, you will be assessed through the presentation of your own gender and diversity assessment of a company, institution or type of workplace related your discipline. You will be asked to give a presentation of your findings as well as submit a final report.
