"The Brussels main character Leo (NOT Leonie) has had a relationship with her boyfriend Simon for a long time. They don't need much more than each other, nor do they have anyone else but each other. To the point of being dysfunctional, they are focused only on each other and their cat. Things are not going well for Simon: one night he comes home and everything seems different. Simon suffers from psychosis and bipolar disorder. He is suspicious, fearful and unpredictable. He is admitted, Leo visits him every day. She doesn't tell anyone about the whole situation, not even her only friend and colleague Lotte. After seven weeks, Simon can go home again, but his problems are not resolved at all. Connected by their difficult childhood, Leo stays with him until the bitter end...

I read the book for the first time shortly after it came out. Although it is a thick book, I could hardly put it down. I was very impressed by the oppressive atmosphere that the book evokes. I sympathized with both Leo and Simon. Simon is stuck in his own head, you see him slipping, but you can't do anything about it. The book is written from Leo's perspective, so you completely understand why she does nothing about Simon's behavior and continues to support him. You read how unhappy and desperate she is, but you also see how she sympathizes with Simon's fears. He is constantly afraid of being overheard and having his ideas robbed. Leo just goes along with it and lets him wrap him in foil. Combined with the two timelines that converge, it is a raw, cinematic, desperate book that cuts straight through your soul."

Het boek las ik vlak nadat het uitkwam voor het eerst. Hoewel het een dik boek is, lukte het me haast niet om het weg te leggen. Ik was erg onder de indruk van de beklemmende sfeer die het boek oproept. Zowel met Leo als met Simon leefde ik mee. Simon zit vast in zijn eigen hoofd, je ziet hem afglijden, maar je kan er niks aan doen. Het boek is geschreven vanuit Leo, waardoor je helemaal begrijpt waarom zij niks doet aan het gedrag van Simon en hem blijft ondersteunen. Je leest hoe ongelukkig en wanhopig ze is, maar je ziet ook hoe ze meedoet met Simons angsten. Zo is hij continu bang om afgeluisterd te worden en van zijn ideeën te worden bestolen. Leo gaat er maar in mee, en laat zich door hem inwikkelen in folie. Gecombineerd met de twee tijdlijnen die naar elkaar toelopen, is het een rauw, filmisch, wanhopig boek dat dwars door je ziel snijdt."
