US Elections: Beyond the Headlines

It is hard to overlook: the American elections. In this lecture, staff members from the American Studies programme will delve into important themes such as the border between the US and Mexico, student protests, and authoritarianism in American politics. Maarten Zwiers, Tim Jelfs, Kathryn Roberts, Anne Martinez, Mark Thompson, and Jelte Olthof will provide an interdisciplinary perspective on topics relevant to this year's elections, with insights from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. After the lecture, the speakers will be happy to engage in a Q&A session. Key themes include:
- Border immigration – What is happening at the US/Mexico border and why is this so important for the US elections?
- Student protests and Uncommitted Movement – How are student-led movements shaping political discourse in the U.S., and what role do they play in the broader political landscape?
- The authoritarian traits of Trump – What does this mean for U.S. democracy?
The lecture will be held in English, and admission is free. This event has been organized in collaboration with the American Studies department and SIB Groningen. Additionally, the lecture is part of the Election Spotlight Series from the Democracy and Governance theme group at the Rudolf Agricola School.
